SATURDAY SIX THANKSGIVING SPECIAL: Six Reasons for Theme Park Fans to Give Thanks in 2015

first_imgShare This! This week’s SATURDAY SIX  is our annual Thanksgiving Special and takes a look at Six Reasons for Theme Park Fans to Give Thanks. 2015 was another great year to be a theme park fan, and for this Thanksgiving we are going to take a quick break from all the turkey, football games, and Black Friday planning to count our blessings and thank the parks and resorts we love so much. So, for one day only, we ask that all Disney and Universal fans put aside their differences and spend a moment appreciating all the wonderful things that we can share together, starting with…# 6 – Selfie Stick Ban at Walt Disney WorldIf you noticed any #Millenials or narcissists wearing black armbands this summer, it was because after banning selfie sticks on Disney attractions earlier in the spring, Walt Disney World completely banned the use of selfie sticks at the parks. Seemingly out of nowhere, the edict came down right after another high profile news story of Disney California Adventure’s California Screamin’ roller coaster being stopped mid ride because of a guest using a selfie stick. On June 26th, WDW guests were given a pamphlet at the parking plaza explaining the selfie stick ban, signage was displayed on the walkways to the parks along with bag check explaining the new policy. The selfie stick ban was definitely a controversial move to be sure. Universal had earlier become more strict on preventing selfie sticks on rides, but Disney outright stopped people from even entering the park with them. Now we joked earlier about only kids and narcissists using them, the truth is that selfie sticks have become increasingly popular across almost all demographics. While people using selfie sticks inside the parks can be a nuisance, they were starting to become a serious safety factor on attractions. You may have seen what is called an Envelope of Protection as Imagineers test out the attractions. This device makes sure that all the attractions are safe for every rider, basically simulating the possible reach of every guest in the ride vehicle. This is why while it may seem like your may lose your arms in Space Mountain if you hold them up during the ride, but in actuality you are nowhere close to hitting anything. What the Envelope of Protection doesn’t take into account though, is guests holding on to anything that extends their reach.–# 5 – Sharknado 3 at Universal Orlando ResortWhen it was announced that the film Sharknado 3 would be filming at Universal Orlando Resort, we here at the SATURDAY SIX were more than a little excited. We love anything – movies or TV – filmed inside the theme parks, and we also happen to love the campiness of the Sharknado series. This was like when chocolate met peanut butter, when pepperoni met pizza, or Misson: SPACE met EPCOT (well, maybe not the last one). The Sharknado crew filmed at the Universal resort for a couple days, so we hoped for at least a couple minutes of footage would make the final movie.Turns out almost half the film takes place either directly within the Universal Orlando Resort, or using locations shot in Universal but substituted for somewhere else, such as the last scene of the movie being shot on the beach of the Royal Pacific Resort. While watching the movie we felt like that kid from The Incredibles, trying to pick our jaws off the floor. TONS of footage took place in Universal Studios Florida, CityWalk, and the Cabana Bay Beach Resort. There was an extended sequence of the film using the Rip Ride Rockit coaster, and an even better moment when the characters in the film got into the iconic Universal Globe only to be swept up by the Sharknado and dropped onto the Pharoh’s Lighthouse outside Islands of Adventure!Last year the movie Escape From Tomorrow received a lot of buzz because of it was secretly filmed inside the Disney parks. Unfortunately trying to get through that film was an exercise in torture. Sharknado 3 meanwhile was a complete tongue-in-cheek blast. The movie is in on the fun and delivers on everything it promises and then some.A Sharknado approaches Universal Studios Florida’s Rip Ride Rockit. The stars of Sharknado 3, Cassie Scerbo and Ian Ziering, protect themselves from the Sharknado by getting into the iconic Universal globe. The Sharknado dropped the Universal glove on top of the Islands of Adventure lighthouse. It arrived with little fanfare, but it immediately became a big success with guests. While no one can touch Disney in the area of amazing meet and greets, Universal now has several that are well worth going out of your way to experience, including the Transformers and Spider-Man. Even better, the Raptor Encounter is here to stay as we have seen several popular meet and greets at WDW (Baymax and Hiro from Big Hero 6 along with Wreck It Ralph) leave the parks because the financial support was coming from the film division. More dinosaurs? Life did find a way after all.Raptor brian careyraptor (brian carey)Smile! (photo by Mike Sperduto)–# 3 – Disney Springs Phase 1The years-in-the-making changeover from Downtown Disney to Disney Springs has tested our patience, but the tide has finally turned. We are now closer to the finish than the start and there are some absolutely AWESOME elements already. Just getting into Disney Springs and getting a parking spot is approximately 2,000,000 times easier and less stressful. Morimoto Asia is already one of our favorite restaurants at WDW. Soon they will be offering a quick service option and we’re hoping Tempura Oreos are on the menu. The BOATHOUSE is a restaurant that would fit in at any Disney park or resort and we can’t give it higher praise. It’s like Rainforest Cafe for adults. Wonderful theming and a fantastic menu (not to mention the dessert YOU MUST GET). Jock Lindsey’s Hanger Bar is better than it has any right to be considering it’s last minute change in theming. The new bridge connecting T-Rex to Rainforest Cafe? Great. Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC offering vegan ice cream? Incredible.Everything so far at Disney Springs has been pitch perfect, and we can’t wait for Phase 2.Morimoto Asia. (photo by Brandon Glover)Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC has two rules: 1. Create a bakery free of harmful ingredients. 2. Wear cute uniforms. (photo by Brandon Glover)–# 2 – ALL THE GREAT ANNOUNCEMENTS!It’s a great time to be a theme park fan today, but you know what’s going to be even better? Tomorrow. Well, maybe not tomorrow, but it won’t be long before we are experiencing Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios (along with even more rumored Pixar stuff. Knock on wood). Universal is ready to take on Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon with its Volcano Bay water theme park. Fresh off another Billion dollar Fast & Furious film this past summer comes Fast & Furious Supercharged to Universal Studios Florida as well as a Jimmy Fallon attraction. SeaWorld is beginning its road back to reclaiming a top spot in the Orlando market with the new Mako rollercoaster. Oh, and there was a little announcement made of NINTENDO COMING TO UNIVERSAL.Concept art for Star Wars Land. (photo courtesy of Disney)Concept Art for Toy Story Land. (photo by Mike Sperduto and Drew of OU)–# 1 – Trader Sam’s Grog GrottoThe first E-Ticket bar has arrived in Walt Disney World. Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto opened at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in the spring and was an immediate smash. With an ultra-themed interior that rivals its counterpart Trader Sam’s Tiki Hut in Disneyland, the Grog Grotto has spectacular show elements and is at the top of its class when it comes to souvenir mugs. The bar is so popular it generally has a wait, however the Tiki Terrace waiting area outside not only offers live music,  it also features a drink you can only get out there (more on that next month in December in our 25 Drinks of Christmas series). The Grog Grotto is not just a home run, it’s a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth that wins the seventh game of the World Series. OH-UA!A Pearl at the Grog Grotto. Social Media: Marketers Gear up Social Media Plans, But Results Aren’t Always Positive

first_imgSocial Media continues to dominate the discussion of business marketers.  A report on the state of Social Media advertising by the SocialMediaExaminer came up with some interesting facts based on a survey of 3800 marketers.Marketers rank the top five social media tools in the following order: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs and YouTube were the top five social media tools.  While Google+ doesn’t make the current top five tools, there is growing interest.  Currently about 40 percent of marketers are using Google+ and 70 percent of marketers say they want to learn more about it while 67 percent say that they’ll increase their use of it.43 percent of people aged 20-29 use social media sites more than 10 hours every week94 percent of companies with marketing departments have adopted some form of social media as part of their advertising campaigns85 percent of business that use social media report an increase in their market exposure76 percent of marketers plan to increase their use of videos and plan on investing on content to appear on Youtube53 percent of companies using social media for at least three years report increased sales60 percent of companies dedicate at least one full working day to social media marketing every weekBut are all these rosy statistics only a slanted view on the full reality of social media marketing?  Some businesses are finding that the use of Social Media doesn’t always bring positive results. The Telegraph from the UK, for example, quotes Anthony Cooper, Pearlfinders managing director, as saying that “We saw investment in social media increase steadily throughout 2011, to reach the highest levels ever by the end of the year.  However, as financial services brands embraced new methods for communicating with customers, they opened themselves up to criticism and negative sentiment… When it comes to spending on social media, marketing budget-holders in this sector are left wondering about the benefits, and many are simply putting spending on hold until they have developed a clearer picture of how social media can be harnessed to improve their brands… This represents an interesting about-turn. ”last_img read more

5 Reasons Why Commercial Software Companies Care About Open Source and Linux

first_imgTags:#enterprise#Microsoft#Open Source When you think of Open Source software and Linux, you probably think of legions of independent developers and scruffy enthusiasts scattered across the globe – pounding out code and annihilating bugs with the words “Linux Forever” and a Penguin tattooed on their forearms.Sure, those people exist, but they’re being crowded out by serious IT professionals dressed in business casual.According to a recent report released by the Linux Foundation, large, multinational, for-profit organizations are contributing significant financial and human resources to the cause. Participants include household names like IBM, Samsung, Texas Instruments and, for the first time, Microsoft. The obvious question is “Why?”Why would companies focused on profit invest in free and open source software? What is there to be gained? The answers depend on which company you’re looking at.Microsoft: If You Can’t Beat ’em, Join ’emMicrosoft once referred to Linux as a “cancer,” but in a complete reversal, last year it announced a four-year pact with the Suse Linux distribution. Due in part to widespread adoption of Linux server products coupled with increased usage of virtualization in large enterprises, Microsoft was forced to concede. Microsoft had to play nice with open source or risk losing customers.IBM: A Matter of DependenceThe situation for IBM is a bit different. Though its reasons for liking Linux are also customer-driven, Big Blue’s big issue is competition with Microsoft. Relying on a competitor – one that comes with a costly price tag for their customers – just doesn’t sit well. Investing in Linux allows IBM to provide low-cost solution alternatives across all product lines that also minimize or eliminate Microsoft’s involvement. That makes Linux a win-win for IBM.Samsung: Healthy CompetitionJust last month, Samsung pledged $500,000 a year to the Linux Foundation. The Korean behemoth joined six other companies with Platinum level memberships: IBM, Fujitsu, Intel, NEC, Qualcomm and Oracle. Many Samsung products, including televisions and appliances, already use Linux-based software. But Samsung is also in fierce competition with Apple in the mobile device space. And having more influence on Linux kernel development will give Samsung greater control over the development of a potential alternative to Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS – the Tizen mobile operating system.Dell & Asus: Exploring New MarketsComputer manufacturers like Dell and Asus are joining Linux laptop manufacturer System 76 in producing notebooks and netbooks preinstalled not with Windows, but Linux. Asus recently announced a netbook powered by the latest Ubuntu release – 12.04. The company also released similar products specifically for the European market. Not to be outdone, Dell also released an Ubuntu laptop in India, where Ubuntu adoption grew more than 160% last year. The draw in these cases is clear: bust open new markets with lower-cost alternatives that make computing more accessible.ARM Makers: Hardware AdvancementsARM processor technology – which promises improved performance with lower power requirements for mobile devices – is the source of the attraction for hardware vendors like Broadcom, Fujitsu, Nokia and Qualcomm.Ironically, the huge variety of business cases for large commercial companies to support Linux adds up to a single, inarguable point: The Linux operating system is now fully embedded at the heart of both consumer and business systems. Since big vendors can’t ignore it, they have to come to terms with it one way or another. And the smarter ones are working on ways to actually use Linux to their advantage. Electronic Medical Records Finally Become a Reality, Thanks to the iPad

first_imgRelated Posts Drchronos was founded in January 2009 by by Daniel Kivatinos and Michael Nusimow. In January of this year, according to a New York Times report, more than 50,000 doctors and 400,000 patients were registered with the service. This excellent promotional video by Apple showcases how Downtown Urgent Care in St. Louis, MO uses drchrono. Y Combinator graduate drchrono is one of many scrappy young startups aiming to change the stodgy old healthcare system. Indeed, drchrono strikes at one of the core problems of traditional healthcare: paperwork. Drchrono is an EMR (Electronic Medical Record) solution for doctors, optimized for the iPad and also available on iPhone and the Web.Drchrono has a wide range of features; including scheduling an appointment, inputting medical details, eprescribing, billing, and Medical Speech to Text technology. Perhaps the best feature is that the patient can get a copy of their medical records, via the app. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Which is the leading EMR service? It’s difficult to say for sure, but Practice Fusion appears to have the most registered customers. It claims more than 150,000 registered medical providers and 40 million patients – which makes it three times larger than drchrono in terms of physicians served. Practice Fusion was one of four digital health companies to receive a huge funding round in the first half of 2012, with a $34 million Series C round a month ago. However, this market is still very much up for grabs. The vast majority of America’s hospitals and healthcare institutions still run a paper-based medical records system. A study released in March 2009 by the New England Journal of Medicine, stated that only 1.5% of 2,952 hospitals surveyed had a comprehensive EHR system. That figure is probably higher today, but it’s still early days for drchrono, Practice Fusion and other budding digital health EMR platforms. richard macmanus Lots of CompetitionEMRs (sometimes called EHRs, Electronic Health Records) are a huge market opportunity and drchrono has no shortage of competitors. They include Practice Fusion, HealthFusion, CareCloud, Athenahealth, GloStream and ElationEMR.The U.S. government is helping the EMR cause by providing incentives to go paperless, via the HITECH Act. If they use a certified EMR service like drchrono, physicians can qualify for $44,000 or more in economic stimulus incentives.
